Today is a day to continue to find gratitude for what I have.

During times like this it can be all to easy to easy to give into fear, panic and feeling of despair. This does not have to be the case; I can make the choice to use it as opportunity to reflect on what is a true necessity in my life.  I have the honor and privilege of working with a great group of mindful kids many times throughout the year. I have learned to never underestimate their wisdom, openness and connection to the universe at large. We have had many conversations pop up about the difference between a need and a want. They have told me more than once that you need shelter, food, water and a family. They know that family can mean many things and that if you don’t have one close you can make one. They say you want a new Xbox or a toy, but you don’t need it.

We typically call ourselves a tribe and we talk about things in the context of what is good for tribe as we make decisions together about rules, activities and plans for the future. I have also tried to teach them that everything we need is around us. If we don’t have everything, we feel we need for a particular project we can look around and find something will work. We can use our collective talents and ideas to create from what is already here.

This challenging time we are all going through could be a seen as an opportunity for all of us to let go of our desire to gather material stuff that has been cluttering up our houses, landfills and our hearts.  I know that I have moved recently from a home I lived in for 20 years and I was hit head on with the amount of stuff I had accumulated. I am now very mindful of what I bring into this house. I ask if there is something that I already have that will do, and there usually is.

This time of fear, illness and uncertainty shall pass and we will have the opportunity to emerge from isolation stronger, wiser and more grateful for what we have than before. The choice is ours to make.
